(TEXT DECODED FROM JPG VIA OCR)--

Henry 1I. Stanley was born in America in 1841. The place of his birth has been a matter of dispute, but it is enough to know that he is a native of this country, and that the homage paid him by foreign powers have not in the least turned his head against his mother country. Enter-ing the profession of journalism, he early became renowned as a special correspondent of the New York Her-ald, and in that capacity made expe-ditions into various parts of the world in search of information re-garding strange people and places, in order that his fellow country men might learn through the columns of the press. all that a brilliant journalist could find out about the country the geographers gave so little information

..  Sketches from the expedition--

Starting from Zanzibar in the month of April, 1871, he succeeded in meeting Livingston at 'LW on November 10 of the same year —what an entire expe-dition, equipped by the English, had failed to accomplish. In July, 1S72, Stanley arrived in England, and re-ceived a universal ovation. Again starting out with an exploring party he headed for the interior of Africa, and by his subsequent exploration of the lake region of equatorial Africa and of the Lualaba Congo in 1874-7, he placed himself in the front rank of African travellers. Under a joint commission from the New York Her-ald and the London Daily Telegraph, Stanley started from the eaRtern ennat. Akron Beacon Journal 25 Jan 1890
